Have any of you guys used the ARDC portal at ampr.org to request any of the free IP address(es) available to amateur radio operators yet??

I'm in the midst of doing this now, other than just experimentation I really have no other need for them now, but hey, they are available, they are free.. might as well right??

So if you have done this, what are you using you addresses for? gateways? repeaters?

Let me know, I think this is very cool and would like to know other peoples thoughts, feelings, etc on the subject.

I did ages ago, but I never really did anything with the allocation they gave me and I think it eventually got released back into the pool.

I believe Cyan still has some address space from them that he uses. You'd know him as the guy who wrote the Synchronet IRCD. If you can get in touch with him, he'd be able to tell you about his experience.

A bit of scandal a few years back when ARDC sold off a chunk of the address space to (I think) Amazon. Partly just on principle, partly with the question being raised of whether they even had the ownership/right to do so. They've since been using the proceeds to fund a grant, and if you have a cool digital ham radio project in mind you can apply for some of that money.

I guess I'm okay with it if they manage the money well and use it to benefit the hobby in perpetuity. Time will tell. Most of that address space was going unused, after all. We lose radio spectrum if we don't use it too, and with less direct benefit from the proceeds of the sale.

Yes, When I had first read about this it really kinda pissed me off.. I mean regardless of whether they administer them or not, who gave them the right to auction these off, and these were supposedly for amateur radio operators, and the WHOLE premise behind this is suppose to be NON PROFIT, and now these guys are swimming in money from this and appointing themselves the ones to decide whether we (the people who are suppose to have these IP addresses) get it or not, then if we do get it, we have to answer to them and fill them in every step of the way with what is done with this money.

I get it, the range was under-utilized so hey, lets sell some off.. BUT i'm willing to bet there are TONS of amateur radio operators out there who have no idea they even exist.. It's not like they are openly trying to tell anyone. I knew nothing about it until I had first saw the news story about them selling some of it off.

So I pretty much think, heck if I cant get some of that money from the sell, I might as well grab these up while I can before I may not even have the option to later in the future because they decided they need to sell more..

and I really suggest others do it too. seems like some dirty politics here, I'm sure the ARRL has or had some decision making in this, and has gotten some nice operating funds off of it.

I hope that is what is going to happen, but you know how that is. It just seems any originization these days loves playing dirty pool, and I have seen some real dirty politics going on in the ARRL and a lot of these ham radio clubs. awful for people saying they are trying to better the communities they are in with their hobbie. anytime money is involved all bets ar off.

So folks get out there, use that spectrum, get them IP's don't let the big guys take away what is ours. You know they will..

Sure - Cyan for example was licensed a decade or more before me, and he didn't know about this allocation until I told him. And he'd been into packet etc. in the past. The addresses are just sitting there but nobody really promotes it or does anything with it.

Yep the portal also shows the grants that have been given, which a lot of them are a bit crazy in my opinion, 30,000 dollars to the university of scranton to study equatorial plazma bubbles, whatever that is. 40,000 to New England Sci-Tech to attrack more youths to amateur radio (ok this works if it is done correctly) 50,000 online arc new packet radio v3.0 seeding uk and ireland usage, 150,000 to the software freedom conservancy for compliance and enforcement. (don't agree with this) 558,000 to university of victoria for a cubesat..

Okay guys, want to launch a BBS to space??

ARISS got 110,000 for (next generation radio) whatever that is

Foundation for amateur radio (never heard of them) 400,000 for scholarships

A couple indengenous tribes got money to outfit their res (this is good imho)

100,000 to SFC for strategic GPL Enforcment

150,000 to the same for Firmware liberation project (sounds like their trying to buyout firmware and set it free??)

ARRL 200,000 for scholarships (they matched)

UC San Deigo for the Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship 225,000

and there are lots of smaller projects and stuff from local ARCs and it has paid to put a few cubesats up.

Lots of STEM money, so yeah it is helping not only the amatuer radio community but a lot of other different communities we benefit from, looks pretty good.

Lots of Big money going to pretty big institutions, hopefully its all on the up and up. :-)

Count me as one of the tons. I didn't even realize this was a thing.

The closest to this I had heard was the .radio TLD.

Worth looking into, if for no other reason than to protect IPv4 spectrum.
